Nice Sunset Pics 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Dead Sea, Jordan; Summer 1997 This one is special: as much for sheer visual glory, as for the memories it captured. During the summer of 1997, I was on vacation with a large group of friends, and our excursion to the Dead Sea was the end of a series of daily bus trips in a long overseas stay. It was to be our last evening together, and we were all a bit sad. The Dead Sea is an unusual place. Its waters contain so much salt that a person will float right on the surface among the dense waves. My friends were doing just that, as you see them in the picture below floating on their backs. They were laughing and waving and calling for me to join them when I raised my camera to take a picture. The Dead Sea is also the lowest spot on earth, and the extra-thick air and the gauze of dust from the surrounding desert combined to create an oily haze. It was surreal in the same way that looking at the world through a jar of fluid is surreal. I pressed the shutter release button half-way to focus when a wave broke in front of me with an enveloping rush. The fifth greatest sunset I have ever experienced:
Note: Soon after I put this picture here, my alert and eloquent friend Mohammed notified me that I "have not seen anything yet," and provided me with a jawdropping, spectacular photograph from a recent vacation. Now is the time to come to terms with your religious beliefs, because you are about to meet your creator. :) A friend took this for him near Phuket, Thailand during the summer of '00, where the movie The Beach was filmed. No colored filters were used. Update: Again the alert friend, Mohammed emailed me today with this link. You are seeing the the exceedingly rare and phantasmic phenomenon of nacreous clouds at sunset. Unfortunately it was taken in the Antarctic, and the average person will probably never experience such a site in their lifetime. :( 6. Agra, India, Summer 1984? At the Taj Mahal. 7. Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA, Summer 1998 On the Pacific ocean. 8. 9. 10. Shiraz, Iran, Summer 2001 I don't have any comments to make about this one yet, except that I took it from the window of a moving bus.
